ICE HOTEL
When I first heard about an “ice hotel”, I thought it was a joke. I know about the igloos that Eskimos live in, of course, but that`s not what comes to mind when I think of “hotel”. The thought that someone could really build an entire hotel out of ice, rent rooms, and then repeat this process each year was really hard to believe. But it does happen! It has now become one of the most popular ways of spending a winter vacation.
The first ice hotel was built in 1989 in a village called Jukkasjarvi in the north of Sweden, where the winter temperature is well below zero. Building begins each year in October, and the hotel is open to quest from December through April. By summer the hotel has melted, but. Amazingly, plans have already been made to build a bigger and better ice structure for the following winter.
Ice hotels are built with blocks of ice and herd packed snow. Guests are given comfortable sleeping bags and sleep on beds made of blocks of ice which are covered with soft tops. Although the air temperature in the room is below freezing, their bodies stay warm.
Personally, I don’t know anyone who has stayed at an ice hotel. If I slept there, I`m sure I`d have nothing but aches and pains. But then, such and experience is probably worth having, and it`s not every night you can drink out of an ice glass while enjoying a beautiful view.
